丹頂 is tanchō, the red-crowned crane. The name means red top, for the patch of bare red skin on its head, the only color on a bird that is otherwise white and black. In Japan the crane stands for long life, and an old saying gives it a thousand years. It appears on wedding kimono, and tanchō pairs stay together for life.
In late winter the pairs dance on the snowfields of eastern Hokkaido, bowing, leaping, and throwing their wings open. By the early 1900s the species was thought to be gone from Japan, until a small group was found in the marshes near Kushiro in 1924. Ours are drawn as a pair, one standing and one mid-dance.
